I offer private specialist tuition for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, tailored to target areas of difficulty in phonics, reading accuracy, reading comprehension, writing, handwriting and spelling. My approach emphasises overlearning for each target and utilises multisensory techniques, including visual, oral, tactile and kinaesthetic activities to incorporate all learning styles in a structured and cumulative way. For instance, jumping on giant letters to spell key words can make the process of learning to spell more engaging and memorable.

Building a rapport with each learner is essential to me, as understanding their interests helps guide my lesson preparation. Some of my favourite lessons include learning spellings through Taylor Swift songs or practising reading key words while exploring a Harry Potter potion. My lessons are designed to be fun, fostering a love for learning and boosting each learner’s confidence.

Based on the assessment session and the background information provided, I can devise a bespoke and personalised teaching programme. The targets and lessons will be tailored to utilise each learner’s unique strengths while addressing their specific developing needs. Additionally, the learner will receive individual strategies that they can apply both in the classroom and in their daily life.

What to expect:

  • During each block of lessons, we will focus on 4-6 targets.

  • We usually start the lesson with a review of our targets and sometimes a sequencing or sounds game.

  • Targets could include skills such as learning a new spelling rule, learning high-frequency words, developing a strategy for answering reading comprehension questions, or reading longer words using syllable division.

  • Skills are taught in small steps and are reinforced each week.

  • We work on automaticity by overlearning each skill through repetition and reinforcement.

  • Reinforcement activities are multisensory and fun.

  • We will start by building word-level skills in the first few lessons, then move on to sentences. When ready, we will start writing or reading full pieces of prose.

  • Each lesson ends with a review of the skills learnt. We will discuss how these skills can be used back in the classroom and in everyday life.
